YOUR ITINERARY:

Day 1 – May 20th: Arrive at the Marrakech Airport at anytime and make your way to the hotel. Take the rest of the day to relax and adjust to your new time zone and climate. Tonight we will have a group meeting so you can go over the itinerary with your guide and meet your fellow travelers.

Day 2 – May 21st: The real fun starts today! After breakfast, meet your local English speaking guide for a city tour of Marrakech. We start the tour with visits to the old Ben Youssef Madrasa, El Badi Palace, the Saadian Tombs, and the beautiful Koutoubia Mosque. After visiting these important and stunning monuments, we will set off to the souks of Marrakech to see how ancient, traditional methods are applied by artisans to create their handicrafts today. The city tour will end in the enormous square of Jemaa El F’na. After dark is when this “busiest square in all of Africa” comes alive. With your riad located less than a minute away, your city tour ends and your free time begins here. Wade into the sea of excitement to experience the sights, sounds, and even smells of Marrakech, or watch the action from a cafe terrace while enjoying some delicious local fare. Once you’ve explored as much as possible for day one, head back to the hotel for some rest and relaxation.

Meals Includes: Breakfast

Day 3 – May 22nd: After breakfast we load up and head out over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. During this trip we reach an altitude of nearly 7500 feet above sea level with views more spectacular than you could imagine. With plenty of stops for photographs, souvenirs and snacks along the way, this journey will be worth the trip all on it’s own. Our best part of the trip is a stop at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou. The familiar landmark has made its way into many movies and TV shows including Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and Lawrence of Arabia. We then hop on the Road of 1000 Kasbahs and travel through the Valley of Roses to our accommodations for the night in Dades.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4 – May 23rd: Enjoy breakfast with the group before we make a short drive into the heart of the Valley of the Roses where we will spend the day with a local family learning about their day to day lives in the Valley. You will have the opportunity to help prepare a traditional Moroccan lunch or sit back and enjoy time immersed in conversation and cultural absorption. Enjoy a traditional meal with the family before  heading down the road to have Henna applied OR visit a local traditional hammam. Those who opt out of the Hammam experience can do a little exploration of the village. If time and bloom allow it, we may have the opportunity to harvest blooming rose petals to help process into rose water with the locals.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 – May 24th: After breakfast your tour continues with a short drive to the nearby Todgha Gorge. We will have the opportunity to walk through the the canyon while snapping pictures of the impressive surrounding gorge. After our short stop, it is on to the city of Tinghir, where we start our guided tour of the palmeraie and old Mellah (Jewish neighborhood).

After a short time exploring Tinghir with the group, we continue on to the giant dunes of the Sahara Here we will transfer to a more traditional mode of travel and make our way via camelback into the heart of the dunes. After a camel ride through the impressive sea of sand, we will arrive at our oasis desert camp. Upon arrival, you can climb one of the nearby dunes to watch the spectacular sunset slowly dip under the horizon. Watch as the sky begins to light up with millions of twinkling stars We will enjoy dinner prepared at camp, followed by some traditional Moroccan music and more stargazing. Whether you sleep in the warmth of your Berber tent or under the gazillion stars that hover above the Sahara, this is likely to be a night that you will remember for a lifetime.

Day 6 – May 25th: Your guide will wake you before dawn so that you can watch the glowing and rejuvenating sunrise over the nearby giant dunes with a fresh cup of joe. After sunrise we will load up our camels and enjoy the early morning trek back to the kasbah on the edge of the dunes. Upon arrival we will enjoy breakfast and have an opportunity to shower and get ready for the next part of our adventure.

When you are all refreshed and clean, we will travel along the Ziz Valley Gorge to Midelt, nestled in between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas Mountains. Here, we will stop for the night and take in the stunning mountain views before retiring for our mountain slumber.

This imperial city was once split into the ancient cities of Fas Elbali (founded by Idriss I in 789 AD) and Al-‘Aliya (founded by his son, Idriss II, in 808 AD). Known as Fez since the two cities combined in 1070 AD, this city will give us a chance to explore ancient landmarks that are still relevant today. Still operating today, the Al-Qarawaiyin University was founded in 864 AD and holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest continually operated university in the world. Architectects throughout history have worked diligently to keep the ancient ruins exceptionally preserved, despite the 18th Century earthquake that caused significant damage. It is a prime example of a “large Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Empire”, according to the UNESCO World Heritage listing.

After snapping some shots and discovering the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, we continue on to the imperial city of Meknes. Greeted by the stunning gate of Bab Mansour, we enter the medina through inspiring marble pillars before finding ourselves at the tomb of Sultan Moulay Ismail. This sultan ruled over Meknes as the capital of Morocco from 1672 to 1727. Next, we will check out the ancient Agdal reservoir and the former granary and stable that lay alongside itr. After touring these sites, we will hop back in our transport to Morocco’s Blue Pearl, Chefchaouen.
